How I Manage ADHD Without Medication

Managing ADHD Without Medication: The Micro Systems That Keep Me Going

When I first got diagnosed with ADHD, I fought the idea of medication hard.
(Which is kinda ironic for someone who went to pharmacy school.)

It wasn’t because I’m anti-meds.
I’ll 100% take them if I’m really sick.
But I’ve always leaned toward figuring things out without relying on prescriptions.

So when no pharmacy near me would fill new ADHD scripts—only existing ones—I eventually gave up.
I thought, “I’ve made it this far without meds… I’ll be fine.”

Spoiler: I was not fine. 😂

The Reality of Living Unmedicated With ADHD

My productivity tanked.
My mood was swinging.
My confidence in business? Gone.
And the shame spiral? Very real.

But eventually… something shifted.

I started to notice my ADHD in real time:

  • When I was frozen at my desk—I recognized it.
  • When I was spiraling in overthinking—I caught it.
  • And then, like a light switch, my systems brain kicked in:
“There has to be a better way to do this.”

Building Micro Systems That Actually Work (For Me)

I didn’t go all in on some rigid routine or try to mimic neurotypical productivity hacks.
I just started creating little systems—micro habits, tech tricks, and support tools—that helped me function on my terms.

Here are a few I swear by as an unmedicated ADHD entrepreneur:

The “Just Yap About It” Method

When I catch myself overthinking, I open ChatGPT and start brain dumping.
Then I ask it to reflect back what it sees—kind of like a no-judgment therapist who types fast.

Sometimes just seeing my spirals spelled out is enough to help me break the loop and move forward.

Custom GPT Prompts (With My ADHD in Mind)

I literally tell my GPT that I have ADHD.
So when I ask it to map out a project, it breaks things into smaller chunks.
No 47-step overwhelm. Just what I need next, and nothing more.

My Celebration Form

Every time I complete something small—send an email, reply to a message, finish a task—I log it.
And the form celebrates me.

I programmed it with custom responses that give me a dopamine boost on the spot.
Silly? Maybe.
Effective? Absolutely.

Systems That Support, Not Punish

I didn’t build these all at once.
But each one gave me back:

  • a little more momentum
  • a little more trust in myself
  • and a little more proof that I wasn’t broken—just operating without support

Because when the world says “just try harder,”
ADHD brains need systems that try smarter.
